Ryslig's Expanded Monster Guide
Nov. 6th, 2022 01:17 amThe Expanded Guide is edited by Chiaki Nanami.
The Expanded Guide begins with a condensed & re-edited version of Spengler's Guide, written several years prior. This contains broad knowledge of the 23 monster types at the time, and largely features the information covered in Ryslig's bestiary.
The new content in the Guide consists entirely of individual monster testomonials.
Submissions to the Guide can be made by anyone at any time, in a drop-off box at the Insert Coin arcade. The form below can be used as a template for any monsters looking for inspiration or structure for their entries. Nanami copies out the entries longhand, and stores the information in several locations, so that the information is never lost.
A copy of the current manuscript may be requested for casual perusal at any time.
As of now, the Expanded Guide has not yet been officially published on the peninsula.

ARACHNE

Date: 2023-02-10 01:27 am (UTC)monstertransformation? The arachne transformation has very specific, niche abilities; it’s easy to avoid using them, which in turn means you have to feed less often. I very rarely used them when hunting.
The arachne transformation also grants a very wide range of awareness. The positive side of this is that you always know who and what is happening around you, so long as they’re making contact with the ground.
What do you dislike about being this
monstertransformation?Chitin is weird. In my experience, it did not have the same range of sensory input as skin; it was both extremely sensitive to certain things (vibrations) while being largely numb to others. I also found the additional sensory input of having eight eyes and the ability to sense vibrations through my legs was often overwhelming. As an example, it was difficult for me to sleep in a traditional bed while living with others (especially nocturnal roommates). Even with all my legs tucked up onto the mattress, I was still able to sense when someone passed in front of the door.
Vibration sense, for me, was something between touch and sound. It’s very difficult to describe what it was like. Something between sonar, picked up through my arachnid limbs; inputs had a textural quality, as they moved through solid surfaces. In some ways it was similar to listening to loud music with a prominent bass track, where you can feel the sound as it vibrates in your body. It was sensitive enough that I was very quickly able to learn things like the different steps and gaits of my associates, or the general quality of things like feet vs. hooves vs. paws vs. talons. I had no way to truly turn it off, beyond removing myself from as much input as possible.
I also struggled with the changes to my eyesight. While my frontal vision was fine, my peripheral vision was poor; my tertiary eyes were colorblind and had low vision. They were best suited to identifying movement, especially in combination with the vibration sense.
What is something unique to you about being this
monstertransformation?I have never been close with those who have gone through the same transformation, so I’m not sure what about my experience was unique.
What types of creatures or beings influenced your
monster formtransformation?Spiders. It took some time to research specifically what kinds, but in the end I believe the transformation took traits from brown recluse (namely its venom, but also the shape of my legs) and orbweaver (general eye placement, web weaving patterns) spiders.
What is it like to feed as this monster?
Unpleasant [1]. However, I found I did not have any particular instincts re: feeding (beyond the occasional compulsion to wrap corpses in silk, which was easy to ignore) which gave me more options in terms of preparation.
[1] I find all of the various feeding methods to be deeply unpleasant.
What are some notable physical features you have as this monster, and what do you like or dislike about them?
I grew an additional six eyes on my face. Two below my original eyes, which were more human, and two on each temple, which were arachnid. My legs were arachnid from the mid-thigh down. I also grew four long arachnid legs on my back.
The legs on my back were very cumbersome and inconvenient. Although I could pull them closer to be somewhat smaller, their sheer size meant that I was too large for most doors. I couldn’t sit in most furniture and all of my clothes had to be tailored to fit my specific transformation, along with closures to help them fit better during the cold months.
What are some notable psychological changes you have as this monster, and what do you like or dislike about them?
I have always been a particular person. I prefer things to be organized and I have always disliked errors. The arachne transformation took these preferences and made them feel more like compulsions. If things weren’t “correct,” it was impossible for me to just let them be. I would do certain tasks over and over again.
I suppose one positive for me is that I found myself interested in a broader range of skills related to textiles because of my compulsion to weave webs. I was gifted some supplies for knitting and crocheting, which is a hobby I’ve kept up with even outside of the arachne transformation.
Would you
become this monstertry this transformation again? No.
Would you
become this monsterremain this transformation for good? No.

Date: 2022-12-28 12:29 am (UTC)You can remain mostly humanoid, albeit with some... add-ons. Antennae, wings, odd eye color, the works. Also, the wings act as a bit of insulation on cold days. Not too bad.
What do you dislike about being this monster?
No one told me secondary arms were on the table, and flight isn't always instinctual. I still haven't figured it out. Having how your feet are built rearranged is really a hassle, especially when it comes to reassessing your balance. But saves some money on shoes, I guess.
What is something unique to you about being this monster?
Some of the patterning on my wings and overall coloration including the carapace are... definitely not things that appear in nature. They are, however, uncannily similar to a get-up I wore for an extended period of time back home. Not a fan!
What types of creatures or beings influenced your monster form?
As far as I can guess, some kind of moth. Similar scale-like things that make up the wings, similar wing structure, same kind of fuzziness that doesn't show up on butterflies. Library books will only help so much with identification.
What is it like to feed as this monster?
Difficult to navigate solo. Had to ask an associate who was a faerie at the time how to do it. Partially intuitive, partially 'you'll figure it out once you're hungry enough.' Not an ideal situation overall.
What are some notable physical features you have as this monster, and what do you like or dislike about them?
Secondary arms, which are awkward to adjust to. Not a fan of their coloration either which brings a whole new meaning to 'blood on your hands'. The fluffy 'collar' around the neck is surprisingly nice. Could do without the pseudo-turtleneck carapace, aesthetically-speaking. Also, the bug feet. Pain in the neck practically and aesthetically.
What are some notable mental changes you have as this monster, and what do you like or dislike about them?
Inability to lie, typically accompanied by nausea/feelings of illness. A fascination with lights or shimmering objects. Unsure if anything else is related to being a monster, or the circumstances surrounding this.
Would you become this monster again?
Yes. By now it's familiar, and familiarity outweighs the urge to experiment with what else I could possibly be.
Would you become this monster for good?
Unsure. Just have to wait and see what the Fog tosses at us next, considering that's how I temporarily became something else.

Date: 2022-11-13 09:48 pm (UTC)Flying. Also being strong, but I guess that's every monster. The fire powers are pretty nice too.
What do you dislike about being this monster?
I'll get into more further down, but I miss having full hands. But I don't think that's a general gargoyle thing. The hunting instinct can get REALLY intense especially if I don't hunt often.
Also turning into stone in daylight is really obnoxious. A lot of monster are nocturnal though so it's not as bad as it could be. Actually I like sleeping as a statue more than not most days.
What is something unique to you about being this monster?
I've never seen another gargoyle who's arms are their wings. They all have back wings. I think I got conned here. I've never been close enough to other gargoyles to know if they also do the furnace-sounds thing I do? I also almost never make fire with my hands. I CAN do it, but it feels more natural to breathe fire
What types of creatures or beings influenced your monster form?
Mostly western wyvern/dragon I guess? I look a lot like a type of Noise from back home, even down to the color.
What is it like to feed as this monster?
It... took a while to get used to. My hunting drive is really strong though, so I don't really have to think of it much at the time. I just.... swoop down. I know some meat eaters kill with their claws or teeth, but I apparently hunt kind of like a falcon? Swoop down and hit them so hard I snap bones. If they survive then it's talons and teeth. But at least that way it's really fast.
...if I'm pissed off though I tend to carry them away and drop them. I don't like that.
What are some notable physical features you have as this monster, and what do you like or dislike about them?
The wyvern wings are the most notable. I'm also really brightly colored? My tail is really thick too, and I used to knock things over with them before I bought a new tail from Mana. it's still thick but I can curl it out of the way now.
What are some notable psychological changes you have as this monster, and what do you like or dislike about them?
I get pissy really easily. If someone talks shit I can't help but try and get them for it. Also the hording. God damn the hording is... something. At first it was just things I found important to me or reminded me of important people. But it started growing to anything I liked at all. Even my own shed rock bits if they looked cool. It's taken over an entire room of my house. I probably have a couple grand solars hidden in that thing.
Would you become this monster again?
I don't mind it
Would you become this monster for good?
I can't think of a monster I want to be MORE than it? So I'll probably stick with this.

Date: 2022-11-06 06:21 am (UTC)(no subject)
Date: 2023-06-05 12:30 am (UTC)First and foremost, my wings. They're very large and could be troublesome to maneuver at first, but I've grown very attached to them. For me, they represent the freedom to go anywhere I can whenever I want. Flying is my favorite part of being a Harpy. No competition. I love to soar through the sky, on sunny days and cloudy ones, even in rain and snow though I do have to be careful so I don't get sick. It's a fast way to get around, and it gives me time to reflect and think on my commutes.
My wings are also I believe quite beautiful. They are now my proudest feature.
I also enjoy my eyesight being much better! I don't think I'd like it as much if I couldn't spy a friend from high up. If I need to, I can sort of turn it "off" I suppose? I'm not entirely sure about the terminology.
What do you dislike about being this monster?
Caring for my plumage has been an ongoing process. I have to find the right shampoo, conditioner, and body wash that works with my unique physical form. A quick shower doesn't exist anymore, is what I'm saying!
The difficulty of finding clothes without them being tailored is also troubling. I essentially have to only wear backless shirts unless I take them in somewhere, and while I've become more used to them, I miss the simplicity of a t-shirt.
Lastly, my feathers sometimes seem to have a mind of their own. They're incredibly expressive, which can be fine sometimes, but it's not my favorite thing.
What is something unique to you about being this monster?
When I turn into my fog form, for about half a day I have a beak instead of a nose and mouth. It's very disorienting, even though it doesn't really hurt.
What types of creatures or beings influenced your monster form?
I largely have the coloration of what I believe to be a kind of dwarf kingfisher. The species doesn't exist on the peninsula, so I haven't been able to track down much about them, but the small bird form I can take resembles them in physical structure as well.
Beyond that, I have been told I look like a phoenix. I'm reluctant to say definitively that's what I am, but I take great pride in even a superficial resemblance.
What is it like to feed as this monster?
A little strange to be honest. I don't have fangs, so sometimes it's difficult to eat when the meat isn't prepared, but other times adrenaline helps to overcome that. Since I've started taking care of my hunting instincts, it has been much easier, should I feel the desire to eat raw.
Largely, I still prepare my meals, however. I enjoy cooking and making food for myself and my girlfriend and whoever else I may be entertaining.
What are some notable physical features you have as this monster, and what do you like or dislike about them?
Obviously the wings, but aside from that, there's my hair, made mostly of a feathery texture that is somewhere between feathers and hair, and feet. After much adjustment, I'm fine with them both. But at first it was a little startling, as when I molt my hair goes as well. It all falls away and comes back within a week, but I certainly get some strange looks around the start of May.
As for my feet, that has been another adjustment period. I'd like them more if there was some sort of tailoring for talons. It's nice to wear anklets, but I miss shoes. Talons are much sturdier than human feet, but it's still never fun to step in something gross or step on a sharp Lego-like toy at the orphanage!
What are some notable mental changes you have as this monster, and what do you like or dislike about them?
The largest ones are the draw towards shiny and sparkling objects and nesting. Both are ones I've become used to, again, but it can be a little bit annoying to be on my daily commute only to take a detour because the sun's caught someone's broach in just the right way or something like that. I call it the bird brain, and it's more troublesome than anything else.
Nesting is, as the name implies, the urge to build a nest, and I started being most affected by it when my fog form first emerged, though in retrospect it's always been there. When I'm in my normal form, I find myself feeling the desire to gather warm or comforting objects and keep them close to me while sleeping. Not incredibly disruptive. When in my fog form, however... I more strongly resemble a bird (a phoenix, if I may be so bold), and the instincts are ramped way up. I first started building a nest on the roof of the 38-8 apartments then.
All instincts seem to be more intense while in my fog form, actually. Normally it's a good balance. I would not want that full time.
Would you become this monster again?
N/A
Would you become this monster for good?
Yes. If I could, I would stay a Harpy forever.

Date: 2022-11-11 10:13 pm (UTC)I felt far more relaxed than I do in my usual state. My problems felt far less pressing; what mattered to me most was comfort, safety, enough sleep, and the occasional hunted meal. I could move stealthily, even transforming into a small feline form to escape detection.
What do you dislike about being this monster?
Though I had wings, due to an injury, I was effectively incapable of flight for the entire transformation. Nephilim can hover without so much as a flap of the wings; for manticores, everything is so physical. Many of the psychological changes I experienced were embarrassing. The color of my fur in cat form echoed my hair, which is unique enough that I couldn't blend in with other animals. I expected I would be a creature far more lethal and elegant, but my form was instead distressingly mundane.
What is something unique to you about being this monster?
I was under the impression that manticores had wholly insect tails, but mine was an exceptionally furry cat tail — externally. The flesh and fur of it could peel away to reveal the venomous stingers beneath.
What types of creatures or beings influenced your monster form?
A typical house cat, long-haired and fairly large (for a cat). My wings had some mix of feather and skin, like both bird and bat. I do not know what monstrosity of a beast the tail belonged to, and I hope I never find out.
What is it like to feed as this monster?
I wanted to play with my food, which was certainly unique across the monster types I've been. I would get distracted, wide-eyed and eager, by the sight of prey animals, and I felt a desire to pounce at them, though it did not extend to compulsion. I had to drape a sheet over my own pet's enclosure so I wouldn't be tempted. The stinger was useful for hunting, and my enhanced senses made prey easy to track.
What are some notable physical features you have as this monster, and what do you like or dislike about them?
The fur was luxurious to the touch; it required a ridiculous amount of brushing and grooming to maintain. My transformation was in the warmer months, and, as the weather got hotter, I coated the entire apartment in hair.
What are some notable psychological changes you have as this monster, and what do you like or dislike about them?
As stated before: they were embarrassing. The tendency to groom as any cat does was bearable, if disgusting, when limited to myself. But there were times I was compelled to groom others, to press my head against them, to purr in their presence. As a whole, I was far more openly affectionate and prone to clingy physical contact than I ever naturally am. Feeling more at peace than usual was pleasant, I admit. I could curl up anywhere and take a nap. And so I did, multiple times.
Would you become this monster again?
I think I would.
Would you become this monster for good?
That I am unsure of.

Date: 2022-11-11 09:41 am (UTC)While this does not apply to all merpeople, I appear mostly human when on land.
What do you dislike about being this monster?
The change to one's aquatic form is outside of the merperson's control. One can attempt to take protective measures by avoiding rain, for example, but there will always be instances where one is caught off guard by water. When leaving home, be prepared and bring a towel.
What types of creatures or beings influenced your monster form?
Cephalopods. (octopi, squids, etc.)
What is it like to feed as this monster?
Intense and aggressive, but mostly intuitive.
What are some notable physical features you have as this monster, and what do you like or dislike about them?
Fins on my arms, legs and near my ears, along with a light layer of scales. Gills in the sides of my neck. A sharper set of teeth. Webbing between my fingers and toes. When subjected to water, my legs become tentacles similar to those of octopi. Both the tentacles and the webbing are capable of changing color, which appears dependent on my emotional state.
What are some notable psychological changes you have as this monster, and what do you like or dislike about them?
I tend to take small items with a shine to them. This doesn't always happen on a conscious level, so I need to stay on guard and check my pockets every so often, lest I take something which doesn't belong to me.
Would you become this monster again?
Yes.
Would you become this monster for good?
Yes.

Date: 2022-11-12 05:23 am (UTC)I’m everything there is to being a mutant bandicoot, but even stronger!
What do you dislike about being this monster?
I don’t have soft paws. It’s always weird changing back from monsters that do.
What is something unique to you about being this monster?
No horns! Ear for music. Humans get... entranced. Still trying to turn that off.
What types of creatures or beings influenced your monster form?
Just a pig, mostly. But with the feet that hippos have, not hooves.
What is it like to feed as this monster?
I eat meat. Pigs also eat anything they find that’s food to them, but I don’t do that in the city.
What are some notable physical features you have as this monster, and what do you like or dislike about them?
My snout is strong for digging!
And my fur looks mostly the same, but it’s rough and scratchy to everyone. I miss when it was soft because everyone wants to pet soft things.
What are some notable psychological changes you have as this monster, and what do you like or dislike about them?
Nose for truffles. Why do pigs like them so much? They’re gross. At least humans want them for money?
People mention how minotaurs are easy to get mad, but most of the time I can tell myself lots of good reasons to not be mad. Especially when… sometimes I worry… if I’ll make things worse even for good reasons.
Would you become this monster again?
Strong pig is what I am right now.
Would you become this monster for good?
Not sure.

Date: 2022-11-11 08:06 pm (UTC)Most everything. I'm stronger than I used to be, and faster, and much more flexible. I can see better than most folks because I see with my tongue, so I get heat readouts on everything around me. I'm height-adjustable so if I need to reach things high up or see over crowds it's no trouble.
What do you dislike about being this monster?
Being a snake in this climate can get frustrating when winter rolls around. I usually tuck heat packs and hot water bottles in the inside pockets of my coats to keep myself from sleeping all day or, God forbid, hibernating. Shedding is no fun either, though it got easier with time and practice. Warm water really helps.
And it took me a real long time to figure out how to dance with no legs.
What is something unique to you about being this monster?
I'm not sure if there's anything I've got that other snakes don't have. Maybe my horrible vestigial toes? When my scales came in my legs melted together but the pinkie toes stayed down at the end of my body. Apparently this is a thing some snakes have, though they get claws like when they used to be lizards which I think is marginally less awful.
What types of creatures or beings influenced your monster form?
Snakes. Possibly a specific type of snake, but I'm no snake expert and I couldn't tell you. I know there's rattler in me somewhere given I have a rattle and venom, and whatever the other part is has stripes.
What is it like to feed as this monster?
Straightforward. Nothing surprising if you know anything about how snakes eat. I need meat and I need at least a grown human's worth of it every month, though that'd be if I was just barely scraping by on keeping myself fed. I have to eat them whole and I have to eat them live, though if you wiggled a dead body at me it'd be enough to trick the snake brain into not knowing the difference. The rattle makes it more humane than it might be otherwise. I can make them think they're relaxing on a beach drinking a smoothie and happy as a clam. A good portion of my food comes from folks in hospital who know they're not ever getting out and want to go comfortably, and the rest comes from people who are stupid enough to attack a thirty foot long man-eating snake. I figure if they tangle with the bull they must know they're risking getting the horns.
One thing nobody tells you is that if you eat a person whole you're probably not going to be able to digest their clothes. You'll be coughing those back up in half an hour or so and it's not pleasant.
From what I've heard there's another way some snakes feed that has to do with making meat smoothies out of people rather than eating them whole, but I don't do that and honestly it sounds much worse out of the two options.
What are some notable physical features you have as this monster, and what do you like or dislike about them?
The snake body's the obvious one. About thirty feet of it from nose to rattle, which is apparently on the longer end. I can be my own chair and all but it does make getting through doorways in a timely manner difficult. I've got inch-long claws that I can't retract and that grow back real fast if I try to file them down, so I've just learned to work with them. Scales are a given and I've already talked about shedding, but it's worth saying I've also got scales over my eyes and that means I don't blink unless I do it on purpose. I've found some people find that off-putting, same as the fact that I look like I don't breathe because everyone's looking at where my human lungs would be but my lungs are about six feet long and down in the snake body. My jawbone's split, too, so when I yawn my face looks like a real nightmare. The beard helps cover it a little but I try not to do it around people who are newer or more faint of heart.
What are some notable psychological changes you have as this monster, and what do you like or dislike about them?
The strangest was the urge to hide in little dark corners. For a while at the start I was shoving myself partways into cabinets or under chairs. Now I have a box at home I built just for the purpose. I also take more naps, generally at least one in the middle of the day if I can get it, under one of my heat lamps. I also get real irritable whenever it's time to shed; I can usually tell it's coming up because I'll start to be in a foul mood for no good reason.
Would you become this monster again?
Yes. I've been plenty of others but I'll always come back to snake. That's what I'm meant to be.
Would you become this monster for good?
That's the plan at present.

Date: 2022-11-11 08:43 am (UTC)When reading the older guides, please take note: Nephilim is plural and therefore, "a nephilim" is incorrect. The singular form of nephilim is best written as naphil. Nephil is also acceptable if one prefers. If you dig down into the linguistic history deep enough, you'll find that nephilim isn't accurate either because of how it was written in Hebrew, which is נְפִילִים. More accurate would be n'philim/n'phil, since the 'eh' isn't fully articulated, but you'll be hard-pressed to find anyone who would write it like that. "Naphil" is a romanized word often found to describe giants, and most agree that the nephilim described in the Hebrew bible are actually the same species. Therefore, naphil is the top option.
What do you like about being this monster?
The power of flight!
What do you dislike about being this monster?
The inability to sleep. You won't realize how many hours go into a day until you have to be awake through all 24 of them. Couple that with going incorporeal in darkness, and you've got a lot of dull nights ahead of you. The lighting out in the streets isn't anything to write home about.
What is something unique to you about being this monster?
[This one is left unanswered. He meant to get back to it later and just... didn't.]
What types of creatures or beings influenced your monster form?
Lion for the tail. My wings rather look like those used in depictions of Horus, a god of Ancient Egypt, when he's taking his falcon form.
What is it like to feed as this monster?
Horrific. I'm basically shoving someone's soul straight out of their body and I don't like it.
What are some notable physical features you have as this monster, and what do you like or dislike about them?
I've got the wings, the tail, the halo and extra eyes on my temples. The eyes are the worst. I had some pretty bad vertigo the first week. And my eyes (all four of them) glow sometimes, which is not a problem for me, but does make it difficult for others to look my way when it happens. Also, people keep telling me I smell nice?
What are some notable psychological changes you have as this monster, and what do you like or dislike about them?
I get a bit more riled up sometimes when I hear about injustice.
Would you become this monster for good?
I'm not changing it to anything else, that's for sure.

Getting petted didn’t feel… right. Wasn’t as good. Didn’t feel it as much. And needed to eat more to keep using magic, feels bad even though I was sharing the fruit.
What is something unique to you about being this monster?
Soft fur! And soft paws! Fuzzy leaves that acted kind of like my old ears. Lots of different plants put together to be me-shaped, bandicoot-shaped.
What types of creatures or beings influenced your monster form?
I don’t remember all the plants, but I know I was all plants. Even the fur. Wumpa tree branches were on my back.
What is it like to feed as this monster?
I had roots. They… took in meat. How plants do it.
What are some notable physical features you have as this monster, and what do you like or dislike about them?
All my claws had sleep… venom? Vines on my back that could pull and hold things.
Also weird egg face, with a mask shaped like my bandicoot face I could put on and take off. It was weird. I don’t like getting mouths to re-learn.
What are some notable psychological changes you have as this monster, and what do you like or dislike about them?
Got really excited about growing and sharing food. Wasted food made me upset. And clothes felt wrong.
Would you become this monster again?
No.
Would you become this monster for good?
No.
Monster #2: Nymph

Date: 2022-11-11 11:47 pm (UTC)So many things. Being a rat was strangely familiar and comforting. Probably says a few things about me. But when I was a Pooka I was
well, I was comfortable. Even moreso than as a human. I felt healthier than I had in decades.
I got accustomed to being able to smell everything ever. It was pretty useful, really. So was being able to shrink down to the size of an ordinary rat. Some Pookas had to deal with folks underestimating them, calling them cute, but people as a whole don't really underestimate rats as much as they do, say, rabbits or squirrels.
I didn't mind all the sudden appetites for everything, either. Food, substances, sex, didn't matter. Not to get too much into depressing things, but after ten years of no contact, no sunlight, and very little food, being hungry for everything and not having the mental space to second-guess myself all the time was probably just what I needed. I couldn't hide and deprive myself of things like I would have, otherwise. My instincts just wouldn't let me be that shy.
What do you dislike about being this monster?
It did make clothes a bit difficult. My hips were at least three times as large as they were before and I had a very long tail, two things that made trousers an adventure. I'm not surprised that so many Pookas have difficulty with clothes. And I was even shorter than I usually am. I couldn't ever grow callouses on my feet, which made walking a bit painful until I figured out some kind of shoes to protect my toe beans. But those things were easily worked around.
There's a downside to folks being afraid of rats, though, and I had a few close shaves with people throwing things at me.
What is something unique to you about being this monster?
I don't know if there was anything uni
oh! I had fur colour markings that looked like my beard. It was kinda neat.
What types of creatures or beings influenced your monster form?
Rats. Which, I guess, makes sense, because I kept pet rats for years before I ended up here. It wasn't too much of a learning curve, except that seeing and being are two very different things.
What is it like to feed as this monster?
Pretty easy. Pookas consume blood and bone marrow, which are both very easy to get and also very easy to pretend are something else. I could have a kind of detachment from it.
What are some notable physical features you have as this monster, and what do you like or dislike about them?
I changed completely all at once, so a lot of features were notable. The ears and the nose and the whiskers took some getting used to. I got overwhelmed by all the sounds and smells and all the things whiskers sense. Learning how to balance myself on my toes and with a long tail took a while, too, and I fell over a lot. A lot. I lisped around the teeth and my fur felt
weird.
I can't describe it, just for a while it felt weird. So did the whiskers. Like making me want to crawl out of my own skin kind of weird. Like some ancient part of my brain screaming "that doesn't belong there!" That went away after a little while, though.
I also have a very vivid memory of how badly everything below the waist hurt before I took off what was left of my trousers. I wasn't expecting the transformation so, silly me, I was still fully clothed. If you have male bits, maybe consider investing in really baggy trousers.
What are some notable psychological changes you have as this monster, and what do you like or dislike about them?
I couldn't handle being alone. I'd get twitchy if I spent too long by myself, and sometimes that got a bit annoying if I was trying to work on something like writing. The rest of the time, though, I just went along with it. I'd spent so much time alone before this that a pathologically social nature was a nice change of pace for me.
Sometimes, though, I'd get stressed out and dig a hole to just curl up in for a bit. Something about the cool darkness and the earth all around me was soothing. Nesting in general was something I found myself doing a lot. It could get a bit inconvenient, but I largely didn't mind. I also hoarded food, though, and that was a little more troublesome. I'd find out after the fact that I'd raided the kitchen and stashed things here and there and have to go look for them all before they spoiled. Looking back on it it's kinda funny, but at the time it was a nuisance.
Also, I really liked pranks and mischief more than I did before. I managed to avoid doing anything worse than short-sheeting beds or rearranging furniture while someone was out, keeping it to just reading about other people's practical jokes and laughing myself silly.
I wasn't all that wild about being so skittish, though. It took a while for me not to jump at every sound and to get my heart rate to stay down. It was kinda stressful and I ended up sick a few times.
Would you become this monster again?
In a heartbeat.
Would you become this monster for good?
I would love to. That might be what I'll ask La Mana to change me into permanently. It felt so right.

Okay, maybe I should elabourate. I honestly can't think of anything that's better as a Shade than it would be if I was literally anything else. I mean, I suppose some people would see it as an advantage that Shades don't feel pain or get cold or hungry or tired or sick, that Shades don't have to wear clothes or bathe or do any other kind of maintenance, but that's not an advantage to me when I look at the big picture. When I look at what it cost me to not have to deal with those things.
What do you dislike about being this monster?
Everything.
Yeah, I guess I should elabourate on that, too. Shades don't have bodies. We're just
just
there. I can see and hear, but I can't taste or smell or feel. I can't touch anyone or anything. I just go right through them. It takes so, so much concentration to make even a part of me solid and I can't maintain it. Think for a moment what that'd be like. You can see and hear. You can be heard and seen if you work at it. But you can't have the taste of food or the smell of a flower or the touch of someone you love or even sunlight.
And anything I can do as a Shade comes at a price. I can "possess" someone. Ride around in their body or even drive it, but I can only do that for maybe an hour at most before it just dissolves and we separate again and I don't have the strength to go back in. I can take someone's pain but only as long as I'm
not so much touching them but
phased into them, I don't know. But the moment I release them, it comes back.
It comes back.
It's cruel. If I'm to take pain from someone it should be taken for good. And I can't do that no matter how hard I try. It's like the Fog is mocking me. And mocking whoever I might try to help.
The Fog knows my past, I'm sure of that. And she gets some kind of satisfaction out of isolating me again. For ten years I was alone. Just watching and listening. I couldn't risk being heard or seen. I couldn't speak to anyone, I couldn't touch anyone, I was gone and nobody was allowed to talk about me and now I'm back in those walls, but this time it wasn't even my choice, it isn't to help anyone or save anyone it's just because the Fog thinks it's amusing or fitting or whatever and
Sorry. I'd type this over again but
maybe I should keep it.
And if I get too emotional, if I get too angry or too sad or even too happy, I end up destroying anything electrical. Those laptops, televisions, radios, even lights. All the electricity goes out. So I smoke a lot. It keeps me mellow enough to communicate.
What is something unique to you about being this monster?
I don't know any other Shades who have green light. I guess that's unique to me.
What types of creatures or beings influenced your monster form?
I don't know, but people have compared me to a banshee. You know, the Irish ghost? Which is funny because I'm not Irish.
What is it like to feed as this monster?
Horrific. You have to consume souls, which is just harrowing if you have any concept of an afterlife. If a person's body is killed, their soul can still go to wherever it is they believe it might go, but if their soul is consumed? What then? If souls are energy, where does that energy go? The Sea of Stars? No-where? Shades don't excrete because, again, we don't have bodies. Are all those souls kept inside of a Shade? Nobody knows. I don't even know. And I don't think anyone's tried to find out.
What are some notable physical features you have as this monster, and what do you like or dislike about them?
I don't have any. I don't have a body. I'm just shadow and a few green lights. And I think I've ranted enough about what I don't like about that.
What are some notable psychological changes you have as this monster, and what do you like or dislike about them?
I'm really vindictive and spiteful, now. Anything that even looks or sounds like a slight or an insult makes me so angry. Makes me want to punish whoever did it and that is not me, that's not who I am. I hate it. I can't do that to people, I just can't. It makes me sick just thinking about it even though I can't actually get sick. I have to fight it. All. The. Time.
But I fought it the wrong way. I gave it a name and told myself "That's just The Shade talking" so much and so hard that it became something separate from me. It talked to me like it was another person. And that scared me. It scared everyone else, too. People told me I was talking to myself. I'd black out and find out later that I'd exploded in a rage.
That didn't happen in Felfri and when I came back here it continued not happening and that's good, but I still have to fight that
that
I don't even know what to call it any more. This change in me that I don't want.
Would you become this monster again?
Never.
Would you become this monster for good?
No. As soon as I have enough coins I'll give them to La Mana and ask her to change me for good. I can't do this.

Date: 2022-11-11 05:53 pm (UTC)Nothing. Ok maybe not totally nothing. I can run for a long time without getting tired and can use electrical stuff which most monsters don't have resistance to. i can also do painful things without feeling a lot of it.
What do you dislike about being this monster?
Everything else. You ever wanted to know what it would be like to interact with the world through a full body wool sock? Ever wanted to check the weather every moment of every day because a little water will mess you up big time? And forGET swimming. Also magnets. Screw magnets.
What is something unique to you about being this monster?
I puked up and pooped up all my guts and it doesn't sound like any other monsters besides robots do that. I guess I have a jet engine. But it didn't even WORK until I paid Mana to make it go fast. Not very may other 'bots to compare myself to honestly.
What types of creatures or beings influenced your monster form?
Uhhhh robots I guess??? Idk this body kind of looks like my real self but if Robotnik made it. It's insulting really.
What is it like to feed as this monster?
Absolutelu 200% traumatizing nightmare. I have PTSD. I had to change my feeding type. Have you ever smelled burning flesh? Ever seen a skull explode from electricity? I have. And I see it every single night.
What are some notable physical features you have as this monster, and what do you like or dislike about them?
This thing I live in is made of metal and plastic. And all that that implies.
What are some notable psychological changes you have as this monster, and what do you like or dislike about them?
I'm more curious I guess, but I've always been curious. Now it's more of an obsession to know things, to understand. It's annoying sometimes but not that bad.
Would you become this monster again?
I would rather be dead.
Would you become this monster for good?
no but I'm probably stuck here</tr>

What do you dislike about being this monster?
Can't wear shoes, need to spend a lot of money on snacks.
What is something unique to you about being this monster?
I don't know? I'm pink. This might be a general monster thing that's just really rare, but I don't get hungry for people! What types of creatures or beings influenced your monster form?
A deer, but pink. Zombies maybe?
What is it like to feed as this monster?
N/A
What are some notable physical features you have as this monster, and what do you like or dislike about them?
- Antlers: they're kind of small, but I guess that means they don't get in the way as much as they could.
- Hooves: kind of hard to walk on at first, but now I'm used to it.
- Fangs: one of those things that are more "zombie" than "deer," I think.
What are some notable psychological changes you have as this monster, and what do you like or dislike about them?
I don't knowI eat a lot because I'm always hungry, does that count? It's kind of annoying. I don't think there's anything else.Would you become this monster again?
I just did!
Would you become this monster for good?

Date: 2022-11-12 06:20 am (UTC)Felt the most like the old me in a long time… but with claws very good at digging!
What do you dislike about being this monster?
Changing. Day and night, over and over. Being tired most of the day.
What is something unique to you about being this monster?
Marsupial again.
What types of creatures or beings influenced your monster form?
A Tasmanian devil! Would like to think it’s a really famous one too.
What is it like to feed as this monster?
Meat-eating, but with a predator brain! It was new for me, waiting and pouncing at things… But only once in a while. Instincts still liked scavenging more.
What are some notable physical features you have as this monster, and what do you like or dislike about them?
Tasmanian devils are supposed to have long tails, but mine was short. And I was still orange, me-colored.
Day form was… nothing special besides extra human-looking. Looking human isn’t me.
What are some notable psychological changes you have as this monster, and what do you like or dislike about them?
Tasmanian devils are… bitey. For… lots of reasons if you don’t catch yourself. First advice that part of me would give for anything.
It’s good to know about what you are! Animal… monster… If you ask, you’ll know what you don’t know, if you listen! I think most humans have a hard time with that?
Would you become this monster again?
Yes.
Would you become this monster for good?
Maybe.

Date: 2022-11-11 08:37 pm (UTC)What do you dislike about being this monster? shapeshifting hurts and i do it every sunrise and sunset. i have to spend a lot of time grooming and i shed a lot in the spring and fall. i can only shower in day-form if i don't want to spend a long time drying my fur, but i'm usually really tired like that so getting a shower stool was a good idea. clothing all has to be altered but that's most monsters - i have to get custom boots made for winter because salt hurts my paws and nobody makes paw shoes.
What is something unique to you about being this monster? having a lot of different forms: day, night, travel, fog, ultra-fog. it's nice to be able to change into different things, like a multitool. but it also means you have a lot more to keep track of. like i'm not forced to be nocturnal but it is more inconvenient to go out in the daytime. also i think my bite is the most dangerous?
What types of creatures or beings influenced your monster form? mostly a wolf. but my ears and tail are a lot bigger, and i have a slimmer body type and paw socks markings like a fox.
What is it like to feed as this monster? you eat flesh, which i think is the easiest. also: i think some people don't realize you don't have to eat the meat raw. sometimes the instincts make eating it raw feel better but you can cook it if you want to. it's really fine. the soup kitchen is available if you're too squeamish and your hunting instincts aren't too bad.
What are some notable physical features you have as this monster, and what do you like or dislike about them? i'm a big wolf. it's nice that most humans don't bother me now. my senses are way better: i can see in the dark, and i recognize most of my friends by smell and how they sound when they move, so i always know if it's a stranger at the door or not. i'm much stronger and faster and i can jump really well, i think people don't know werewolves can do that sometimes. only pooka are better at it than me. also my bite force is really, really strong. my hands have pads now, which changes how i grip things. brushing my teeth takes longer. i have to be careful not to close my tail in doors. i think it's all worth it though. also i think it's easier for some people to feel more comfortable with an animal than a human.
What are some notable psychological changes you have as this monster, and what do you like or dislike about them? i have a lot more animal instincts in general now that i need to try to take care of. some of them are stuff i already had before but worse, like being bothered by big crowds and loud noises. i think it's important to pick your battles, because it's not a big deal if i look silly but it is a big deal if i react to getting upset or scared by biting and seriously hurting someone. i try to do things that make the wolf part feel better, so i only have to fight it on big stuff like that. listening to yourself is important.
Would you become this monster again? yes.
Would you become this monster for good? yes. it's what i'm supposed to be.

Date: 2022-12-01 07:50 am (UTC)Statement of Intent by Chiaki Nanami
Date: 2022-12-01 07:50 am (UTC)When I first arrived in Ryslig, I was astonished at what I found. The fantastical creatures and magical powers of this world are like those only imagined in my own world. I have longed to escape into fictional places from stories and games, and now here is Ryslig: like somewhere out of my dreams.
It's also like somewhere out of my nightmares, too. Ryslig is not a kind place to any of its inhabitants; not to the local humans, forced to become prey to mutated interdimensional refugees; nor to said refugees themselves, who are subjected to a multitude of horrors on a monthly basis, chief among them forced physical and psychological changes which have the potential of altering their selves at their very core.
These changes are often frightening and painful; and over the years, our community of monsters has come together to provide resources and infrastructure; to ease the transition, and to build a society. This expanded guide is my own small contribution to those resources; and in fact, I contribute not the guide itself, but merely its instantiation.
You see, Ryslig has had works written before about the spectrum of transformations that are idiosyncratic to those of us immigrated to this dimensional plane, most notably the guide written by Egon Spengler several years ago. However, in my research, I have never been able to find a collaborative work on this topic; merely (apparently) solo ones. And while a scientific approach from a practiced researcher may provide a solid base on which to build upon, I don't think it's sufficient to cease the development of resources at that base. Monster changes are so varied that, to each individual, they are practically unique.
This is why I believe that any attempt to be truly comprehensive in this field must be a cooperative effort. We can't predict everything that the future will hold; but what we can do is work to document the present before it fades into a forgotten past, and chronicle our journeys as we go. This is what I hope to do with this guide: to write my own story; to bring together my friends', and to concurrently use this collection as an aid to forging my own future. And to you reading or writing along, thank you for joining with us on this journey; I invite you to share your own as well.

Date: 2023-05-22 09:12 pm (UTC)Let it be said that ALL curses are terrible, some are just a little less terrible than others. In this case, I've kept both my face and my torso, and I'm positive anyone who's ever lost either can tell you what a big difference that can make in your life. For example, when I look in the mirror, I don't go "OH GOD, WHO IS THAT?!" but rather "Oh lord, that's right, I have dog ears, don't I?" One is absurdly less stressful than the other, and I can appreciate that much.
What do you dislike about being this monster?
I feel like a joke on four legs. A centaur, as far as I knew, was a powerful looking half man, half horse creature that had a sort of....er, grace to it. My other half is a dog. Not even a big, majestic dog, but a sort of stubby, round...loafish kind of dog. This isn't even me being self-conscious, I can HEAR the remarks people make about me, and often times it has to do with how round and fluffy my butt is. I hate having to write this down, but it's so prominent that I simply can't leave it out. The fact that I can't wear pants only makes it worse, it's constantly on display and gyrates in a way that draws attention, the comments are inevitable!! My only saving grace is that the amount of fluff...back there, as well as the way the tail rests, makes it so nothing...unsavory can be seen.
I've also come to find that drinking alcohol is out of the question now, unless I want to wake up sick
as a dogthe next morning. I wasn't much of a drinker before, but I work at a bar now and free drinks are customary. I never considered myself a lightweight, so even I know one sip shouldn't do...whatever THIS is. It isn't pleasant, I'm sure it'll become more of a grievance as time goes on.What is something unique to you about being this monster?
Every "centaur" I've seen has been entirely unique so far, to the point where I don't think I've encountered a single standard centaur since these premature changes started. ...Provided the original kelpie transformation doesn't count, of course. I DO feel as though most people have gotten taller, whereas I find myself being slightly shorter thanks to these horrible stubby legs. A part of me wonders if it's a slight towards me, personally, but I could be overthinking things. I'm probably overthinking things.
I'm not entirely grotesque, either, at least as far as public opinion is concerned. Although I may feel freakish, people don't turn away from me and often times I'm even approached for strange requests like petting or allowing their small child to ride on my back. (As if I'd ever allow that to happen.) Compared to some of the others dealing with the centaur transformation, I am considered someone safe to approach. My appearance lowers people's guards down considerably and I won't lie...it's a little concerning. I'm just as deadly as any of the others, if you can believe that, and this lack of caution could very well get these people killed. Luckily, I have self control.
On a more physical note, my fur pattern does resemble lightning bolts in a way that looks intentional, it's not a normal pattern one would find on a dog naturally. Like, it's not a squint-and-you-see-it sort of thing, it's a very oh-yeah-that-is-definitely-a-lightning-bolt thing. It was my element of choice back when I could still use magic, I refuse to believe it's a coincidence. I'm still deciding how I feel about it, to be honest. If it IS intentional, it feels...mean.
What types of creatures or beings influenced your monster form?
A dog. I couldn't tell you if it's some sort of symbolic thing or not, I didn't own a dog or anything before coming here. I don't exactly consider myself dog-like in any sense, or went around calling myself the dog guy.
What is it like to feed as this monster?
Horrific. I would honestly prefer not to get into it, if it's all the same to you. I'm sure someone with a much stronger stomach can write down the more gruesome details. I realize there are people here who are probably desensitized to this sort of thing, being here as long as they have, but it's still been less than a month for me. I didn't even get the grace of a month-long wait, just...try not to judge me too harshly for skipping this one.
What are some notable physical features you have as this monster, and what do you like or dislike about them?
Like all "centaurs," the most notable thing is the four legs under an otherwise normal torso. I want you to imagine how a spine works. Take that, and now apply it to a centaur. Does that sound comfortable to you in ANY way? I won't say that I'm in constant pain, although I know for a fact there are some who are, but I AM constantly in a state of discomfort. Everything feels wrong and if I'm to be honest? It almost feels like this transformation isn't even finished. Like it started, gave up half way and then said "good enough!"
The whole body shape is awkward, finding a position to sleep in comfortably is impossible, and again the only positive thing I can think of is that I got to keep my face.
What are some notable mental changes you have as this monster, and what do you like or dislike about them?
I want to make a note of the anger, especially since you said it wasn't something you realized was happening. I definitely consider it a part of the change, I'm not normally an angry person, and I'd like to think I wouldn't normally feel like...like this even during all this distress. It's hard to describe, but it rests constantly in the back of your mind, just waiting for whatever self-control you're using to fence it in to weaken so it can lash out and snap. If left unchecked, I can easily see it becoming violent. ...This is actually my first time ever admitting this, mostly out of fear that my roommates or coworkers might start thinking that "cute fluffy Merlin" could one day go bonkers and start hurting everyone. I don't want to put that stress on anyone, I'd like to think I've been keeping myself in check, but again...it hasn't even been a month.
If anyone LIKES this sort of change, I'd love to know what other horrible opinions they have, just so I can reassure myself that I can always be worse.
Would you become this monster again?
Oh lord no, if I somehow found a way to change back, I can assure you I'd do everything in my power to make sure it doesn't happen again.
Would you become this monster for good?
I was under the impression that these changes are permanent...? If not, I would LOVE to hear how I can fix this, it's...it's been miserable.
